Welcome new PhD students Rosangela and Lauren!

Hands down, one of my favorite parts of my job is getting to work with outstanding graduate students. So of course, welcoming new grad students is always a highlight. Welcoming two is doubly so!

Rosangela Carreon joined LCB the during the spring 2018 semester to pursue a PhD in geography. A Los Angelina, Rosangela earned her B.A. in geography and environmental studies at UCLA before completing her M.S. in environmental studies from Cal State Fullerton. She's woven GIS and remote sensing throughout her background and has a major interest in hydrological applications. This, combined with Spanish language fluency, makes her a great fit for her project looking at spatial and temporal variations in the partitioning of the water budget in Nicaragua. Rosangela is an awardee of the prestigious Gates Millennial Scholarship. When not coding or geoprocessing in the lab, you might find Rosangela playing pick-up soccer, hiking, dancing, or otherwise being active, often fueled by her own cooking.

This fall, we will be welcoming Lauren Phillips to the lab, to the Geography PhD program, and to UNR. Lauren hails from Lansing, Michigan and earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees from nearby Michigan State University in zoology and fisheries & wildlife, respectively. Along the way, Lauren also earned a minor in applied conservation from the Smithsonian Conservation Biology institute. Lauren brings several years of experience in Nicaragua-based wildlife and human-natural systems work from her Master's project. This made her a natural fit for working on new Nicaragua conservation and habitat characterization projects in the lab. To help convince her to come to UNR, the Graduate School awarded Lauren one of only 6 Graduate Dean's Fellowships for the 2018-19 academic year. Lauren enjoys art, cats, swimming, and kayaking, and is an avid birder, herper, and all-around naturalist.
